Opened: 1876

First performance: Ring of the Nibelungen

Seating capacity: 1,925

Primary patron: King Ludwig II

The town council of Bayreuth, its mayor, and King Ludwig II provided the support to enable the construction of this opera house for the performance of operas only by Wagner. So respected was Wagner by the community that performances in this house remain limited only to the ten Wagnerian operas first selected. It is sold out six years ahead of the performances.

Natural, unvarnished wood forms the interior of the house and provides superlative acoustics. Adding to this sound quality, a unique grid covers the orchestra, directing the sound back to the singers.

The Wagner descendants continue to control the house today.
