Format a Fly Page

Fly pages are separate pages that introduce sections or chapters of your manual. They may contain images as well as text, but do not contain headers, footers, or page numbers. Generally, the backs of fly pages are left blank.

  1. Align the text cursor at the end of the text on the page before your fly page.
Always select section breaks from the page before your new section.
  2. On the Word toolbar, select Insert>Break.
  3. In Section Break types, choose Odd page.
Always select an Odd page section break to create a new section.
  4. Click OK.

On fly pages, format the page number so that Word knows what the page number is, but do not insert the page number.
  5. In Number Format, use the drop down menu to select Arabic numbers (e.g., 1,2,3).
  6. In Page numbering, choose Start at and enter the number 1 if this fly page follows front matter (e.g., Table of Contents).
If the fly page occurs later in the manual, choose Continue from Previous section.
  7. Click Close.
