CECS 5420 (5800.001) Summer I - 1997



Assignment #1 - Topic Search:

You are required to identify, locate, access and retrieve two documents using a topic search on the Internet. Try to find documents that are related to your term paper. You are required to use Veronica for one of the documents and one or more WWW search engines for the other search.

Use the following format to report your findings:

  1. Title of document
  2. Author (s) of document
  3. Author (s) organizational affiliation if available
  4. Short description of how you identified, located, accessed, and retrieved the document.
  5. URL or other location information so that the document can be retrieved by others.
  6. Your critical response to the document.

Limit: 1 page for each writeup.

Turn in: Two printed sets of the stapled materials - one for grading and one to be circulated among peers in your class. Be sure your name and assignment #3 are included on each page. Staple pages for each set together in the upper left hand corner.

Assignment #2 - Net Browsing:

Use the Internet to locate information to in at least five different sites on topics of interest to you:
  1. use Gopher for one browsing task,
  2. Lynx for another, and
  3. Netscape or some comparable Web browser for anothers;
  4. Write a brief comparison/contrast of the different ways of browsing/searching the Net for sites
    and
  5. E-mail it to all other members of your class plus gknezek&jove.acs.unt.edu and rhondac@tenet.edu.
  6. Produce summaries of information you find at each site, in the format below:
    • floppy diskette version of your web page
    • paper copy of your comparison plus the 5 summaries, printed in HTML format with your name on the front page and stapled in the upper left hand corner
  7. come to class on the due date prepared to show your simple web page containing the five summeries.

Turn in a copy of the six pages (comparison/contrast plus five summaries) with your name on the front page and a staple in the upper left hand corner.

Assignment #3 - FTP Get and Put:

  1. Print out a copy of this assignment sheet from the Web and E-mail, then use the file E)xport command in Pine to export a copy to a unix file in your account directory. Use ftp get to move a copy of the file to your hard drive. Print out a listing of the downloaded file. Do you notice any differences between the Web, E-mail, and the ftp'd version?
  2. Take or digitize a picture of yourself (using screen capture with CU-SeeMe or the scanner in 322G or 312), binhex (Mac) or PKzip (IBM) the file. Then attach it to an E-mail message of introduction sent to at least 2 of your classmates, plus - gknezek@.jove.acs.unt.edu and rhondac@tenet.edu.

Assignment #4 - WebPage Construction:

Construct your own web page in your Jove account. Have it linkable from the class page (E-mail KatLen with your URL), and have it provide links to at least two other sites of interest to you. Also, have a link from your home page back to the CECS 5420 class page. Post your term paper on a sub page, and link to it from your home page, so that people can read what you have written.

Term Paper Assignment:

Write a paper of approximately 5 pages double-spaced narrative, on the topic you have selected to pursue through the Internet. The paper should contain at least 3 references and follow APA style. Post your paper on your web page and turn in a paper copy to your instructor.
